Japan helps Ghana to revamp energy sector

The Japanese government through its agency, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has approved $40 million for a project intended to reinforce power supply to the Central Business District of Accra, in Ghana.

Commenting on the development, Chief Representative of JICA Ghana office, Koji Makino, noted that on 8 December 2015, JICA signed a grant agreement with Ghana for the project, with Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) as the implementing agency, Ghana Business News reported.

It is reported that Makino also highlighted the important pillars of JICA’s cooperation in the country including infrastructure development, especially in the power sector in order to promote and sustain economic growth and reduce poverty. Read more...

“As Ghana’s economy grows and power demand increases, there is the need for improvement of the network systems, especially in the transmission and distribution systems,” he said.

“The recent energy crisis stimulated an increase in power generation, which requires corresponding improvement in the system network,” he added.

Revamping the energy sector

Speaking at the at the sod-cutting ceremony of project, energy minister, Boakye Agyarko said: “This government’s vision for the provision of state reliable and secure power supply also include initiatives such as restructuring of debts of the utility companies and securing fair commitment for a reliable supply of fuel.”

Agyarko added: “Be assured of the government’s resolve to revamp the energy sector for a brighter tomorrow.”

High electricity consumption

Minister Agyarko urged GRIDCO and ECG to work closely with contractors and consultants to ensure the project is completed on time, media reported.

Expanding on the motive behind the project, GRIDCo's CEO, William Amuna, said: “Our focus on this district is because it is the highest electricity consuming location in Ghana with its load constituting about 30% of the Greater Accra Consumption.”

“The load growth in the Business District is higher than the national average of 10%. “The yearend projected demand of the Area is 1,400MVA.”
